The Inter High is a yearly cycling event where the top high school cycling clubs of the Japan compete.
Requirements[]
In order to participate, the high school clubs must win or finish in a good placement in the Inter High Qualifiers races that are held in the chosen prefectures of Japan. The team also must not have any incident involving any member that may cause bad consequences to it, such as disqualification of the Inter High edition, regardless of having qualified or not in the preliminaries.
Format[]
The Inter High is divided into three stages that span over three days and twenty teams that compete in the race, with nineteen of them being high school clubs who managed to qualify in the preliminars and a special team composed of members from different high schools. Each stage stage has a sprint checkpoint, a climb checkpoint and its own final goal. Racers who win either of these checkpoints or the final goal earn colored number tags that can be used in the following day or as some personal achievement for the person and the club. It can also be used to boost the team morale and give more pressure in the opponents.
In order to race in the following day, the cyclist must finish the goal under 40 minutes since the first cyclist completed the stage. The competitors who also finish earlier in the previous day will begin early in the following stage. The Inter High's overall winner is decided by who wins the final goal on the third day.
The positions of racers on the course are recorded every 15km, and this information is relayed to spectators and competitors alike. Sensors are used in the recording process.
First Day[]
The first day traditionally begins with a parade for the first two kilometers in order to excite the spectators of the race. The real race starts when its over. The first day is also used for the teams to test their opponents, where they send off their best cyclists in each checkpoint in order to win the colored tags. The winning team of the checkpoint leads the pack and controls its pacing until the start of the following checkpoint.
Second Day[]
The second day is usually the longest day and where the competitors need to perform a more strategic cycling in order to win the checkpoints and move to the next stage with as many members as possible.
Third Day[]
This is the day where all the teams use all their strength in order to reach the goal, usually making all the cyclists of the team spend their energy and making them retire in order to a final member win the goal line and become the overall winner of the Inter High. Unlike the other days, the sprint and climb checkpoints are not disputed like the previous days, as the teams are focusing on the final goal of the competition.
